Welcome to Forward Method Aging Education

Forward Method

Navigating aging, decline, and death has become increasingly important due to the rapidly increasing aging demographic and the availability of life-extending medical technologies. Methodologies of aging well, and dying well, have been explored in historic Christian documents and in modern medical literature. Using data from the New Testament period, Black Plague periods, and medical studies of living and dying well, common themes appear. Various models of increasing positive outcomes regarding aging well, and dying well, have been identified. Each of those models necessitate adapting one’s thoughts and behaviors to the reality of aging, decline, and eventual death. Using data from those models, members of the rapidly growing older adult population can adapt their own thoughts and behaviors in order to maximize their abilities to achieve positive aging outcomes. Adapting thoughts and behaviors, in accordance with successful outcome data sets, to the realities of aging can be successfully achieved through the application of cognitive behavioral therapeutic techniques. Utilizing the therapeutic tools of cognitive restructuring and behavioral activation, older adults can create a specific methodology of reducing distress and increasing mental well being. This can be accomplished through engaging in adaptive thought patterns,  maximizing participation in meaningful activities, investing in relationships, various lifestyle adaptations,  and accepting the reality of human mortality.

Regarding aging and dying well, findings show that maximizing positive outcomes can be achieved through adapting one’s thoughts and behaviors in the following domains:

  • Accepting human mortality, exploring one’s desires regarding mortality, and documenting those desires in order to  maximize self-determination
  • Engaging in meaningful relationships and activities.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle regarding diet, exercise, and socialization.
  • Cognitive engagement assists cognitive health, wellbeing, and longevity. Education was found to be a significant factor in increased wellbeing and longevity.
  • Effective psychosocial health is made up of values-based and goal-directed thoughts, behaviors, and relationships.

"Aging Well"

Various medical doctors and longitudinal studies have identified controllable  factors leading to "Aging Well".

Using that information we can identify life domains that would benefit from change.

What is Dying Well?

Historic spiritually-based documents and modern medical literature have identified many  thoughts and behaviors that are likely to lead to "a good death"

Adapting Thoughts and Behaviors

Adapting one's thoughts and behaviors to the realities of human aging and mortality is the methodology we explore at Forward Method Aging Education.

Meet Forward Method

Forward Method Aging Education focuses on:

Accepting, anticipating, and adapting to age related changes through focusing on the controllable factors of living well, and dying well.
